Online ESL demo lesson and interview tips: what companies actually ask

Short answer: Online English teaching companies do not all hire the same way. In the Online Teachers Company List, HelloKid lists Online Application → Interview → Trial → Orientation → Demo Training before you start teaching (1–2 weeks); Xueersi's interview including a mock class takes about 30 minutes; Varsity Tutors uses an application plus a video interview; Global VCC asks for a teaching video and a Skype interview; MaxTalk says "No Demo" and uses a Skype interview after screening; and International Language Coaching runs an internet speed test during the interview. Read each company's own steps, then practise a short, clear demo and a calm tech check.

Hiring steps below are quoted word for word from company listings in the Online Teachers Company List (checked 7 Nov 2026). Companies change their process, so confirm on the company's own page before you apply. This page gives practical prep tips only — it does not promise a job, students or income, and it states no pay figures.

How to prepare for an online ESL interview or demo

Use this checklist for any company. Adjust the length and materials to match the company's own instructions — some want a mock class, some want a short video, and some (like MaxTalk's listing) say "No Demo".

  1. Read the company's hiring steps before you book a call. Open the company page on this list and the company's own site. HelloKid's listing spells out Online Application → Interview → Trial → Orientation → Demo Training; Varsity Tutors lists an application (about 30–45 minutes) and a video interview; English Everywhere and Rancca Online Education say teachers complete an application process.
  2. Send exactly what they ask for — resume, certificates, photo or video. E-JOY asks applicants to provide a resume, degree certificate, teaching qualification, a clear picture and a self-introduction video (40 seconds–1 minute) before the interview. Global VCC asks for a resume and teaching video with a Skype ID. International Language Coaching says a self-introduction video is preferred.
  3. Do the interview from your real teaching setup. International Language Coaching's listing says an internet speed test is conducted during the interview, so you must attend from the location where lessons will be taught, and they do not interview applicants who are travelling. Use the same computer, headset and room you will teach from.
  4. If they ask for a demo or mock class, teach one clear aim. Xueersi's listing says the interview including a mock class takes about 30 minutes. Plan a short warm-up, one language point, guided practice and a brief close. Keep student talking time high, check understanding with a task (not only "Do you understand?"), and look at the camera. Practise with a timer.
  5. If they say "No Demo", focus on the interview and your materials. MaxTalk's listing says "No Demo" and that shortlisted applicants get a Skype interview after screening. Prepare concise answers about your experience with the age group they teach, how you handle quiet students, and how you recover from tech problems.
  6. Check equipment and internet the day before. See our equipment and internet speed guide. Have a backup hotspot ready if your area has unstable power or internet.
  7. Compare who the company hires, then apply where you fit. Use hubs such as companies hiring Filipino teachers and companies hiring South Africans, then confirm nationality, degree and certificate rules on each company page. A smooth process (PalFish's listing describes a smooth hiring process for new teachers) still does not guarantee a job.

FAQ

Common questions about online ESL demo lessons and interviews

What is an online ESL demo lesson?

A short sample class some companies ask you to teach during hiring so they can see how you run a lesson. Formats differ: Xueersi's listing includes a mock class in an interview of about 30 minutes; HelloKid lists Demo Training as a later step after Interview and Trial; MaxTalk's listing says "No Demo".

How long is a typical online teaching interview?

It varies. Xueersi's listing says the interview process, including a mock class, takes approximately 30 minutes. Varsity Tutors lists an application of about 30–45 minutes plus a video interview. HelloKid's full process from application to demo training is listed as 1–2 weeks. Always follow the company's own timing.

Do I need a teaching or self-introduction video?

Some companies ask for one. Global VCC asks for a teaching video with your Skype ID; E-JOY asks for a self-introduction video of 40 seconds to 1 minute before the interview; International Language Coaching says a self-introduction video is preferred. Other companies skip video and go straight to a call.

One clear lesson aim, short instructions, modelling before the student speaks, a quick comprehension check, and a calm plan if screen share or internet fails. Rehearse out loud with a timer. Match the age group and platform the company uses.

Can teachers in the Philippines or South Africa apply through the same process?
