The numbers
Of the 383 companies in the directory, 276 have a single confirmed hourly rate. The median is $15 an hour, and the middle half of companies pay between $10 and $20.

37 companies list no single number (for example "N/A", a range, or a text description). 70 show pay as Not confirmed.
Why some pay says "Not confirmed"
We show Not confirmed in two cases. Either the listed rate and the company description give different figures, or the saved value looks like a data error (for example a spreadsheet error, or an hourly figure far above anything plausible for online ESL work). We don't pick one figure or guess. If you know the current rate, use "Request an edit" on the company page.
Fixed rates vs marketplaces
Fixed-rate companies set your pay per class or per hour, often with bonuses for attendance, peak hours, or student retention. Marketplace platforms let you set your own price, so the listed figure is often a typical or starting rate, not a guarantee. Check which model a company uses on its page before you compare numbers.
What changes your take-home pay
- Paid vs unpaid time: booking gaps, no-shows, and admin are often unpaid.
- Bonuses and incentives that the base rate doesn't include.
- Platform fees or commission on marketplaces.
- Payment method and currency conversion costs.
Highest listed rates
The highest-paying list ranks companies by a single confirmed hourly rate (up to $60/hr). Compare well-known companies side by side on the comparison pages.
Tools for online teachers
Once you have shortlisted a few companies, it helps to have one page that shows who you are as a teacher. You can create a free online teacher profile page on Teacher4.me and share it with students, parents, and schools alongside your company applications.
