What official pages say (checked 1 November 2026)
Directory listings can be out of date, so here is what well-known platforms say on their own pages about who can apply.
| Platform | Official statement | Open to non-native speakers? |
|---|---|---|
| Preply | "No specific certification or teaching experience is required!" It looks for tutors with "outstanding communication skills". (Preply teach page) | No native-speaker requirement is stated. |
| italki | "We require that teachers have native proficiency or C2 level in order to teach a target language." (italki Help) | Yes, at C2 level. English applications were closed for 26 October to 1 November 2026; italki updates its open languages list every Monday. |
| Engoo | Requirements: "At least 18 years old", "Proficient in English", plus equipment. Applicants register their nationality. (Engoo teach page) | No native-speaker requirement is stated. |
| NativeCamp | Its FAQ lists "Intermediate English level" among the requirements. (NativeCamp tutor page) | No native-speaker requirement is stated. |
| Cambly | "Language: You must be a native English speaker." (Cambly Help Center) | No. Cambly's own page requires native speakers, so we have corrected its listing. |
What they ask for
- 17 of these 196 companies (9%) say no degree is required.
- 28 (14%) mention a TEFL, TESOL, or CELTA certificate.
Where a company lists a language level, it is usually a high level of English (for example C2 or "fluent"). Have a clear intro video, a quiet teaching space, and a stable connection ready before you apply. These are common requirements across company pages.
Who you will teach
